Crocodiles
Ok, arguably one of the weirdest 🤪 but man I love it so much! This piece was inspired by an incredible foiling trip to Southern Costa Rica. While the location and wave were absolutely mind-blowing… the journey down there was an epic mission of its own! To access this particular spot, we had to launch the jet skis and support boat way up at the headwaters of a river (which shall not be named 😎) and navigate a labyrinth of channels and narrow passageways lined by some of the thickest mangrove forests imaginable. This adventure covered some serious mileage, and stretched through the afternoon and into the dark of night. It took some significant faith in our guides to trust they knew where they were going. We did not see another human being for miles as we voyaged on under the stars. With no light pollution to speak of, and no moon, it was pitch-darkness on a whole new level. I lost count of how many shooting stars I saw while flying along on the back of that jet ski. With some perseverance and at least a dash of luck, we finally made it safely to camp.
It’s always wild traveling somewhere foreign in the dark and waking up to discover your surroundings at first light. The sunrise that next morning was one of the most amazing I’ve ever witnessed. Watching the sun come up over the mountains, blasting through the clouds, and reflecting off the river was a moment I will never forget.
Another fun fact, that came to my attention after spending hours on said river - in complete darkness… was that it’s chock-full of crocodiles! Needless to say, I was counting my lucky stars (again) that we made it through those waters unscathed🐊 We spent three days foiling our faces off, and on the return trip… in the daylight… we saw tons of crocodiles! LOOK ALIVE!
