Sea Turtles
When I first set out to work on this piece, and the series as a whole, I knew I didn’t want to rush anything. I didn’t set any deadlines for myself. Perhaps taking a cue from the turtles ~ slow and steady! This really allowed me to dive deep (no pun intended) into each one, and explore some new techniques with color pallets and lighting - really pushing into gradients and shading. There is also a focus on depth-of-field in these pieces that I had not explored to such an extent previously.
I have always loved sea turtles. They have a prehistoric dinosaur vibe that exudes longevity and wisdom. They live such long lives, I feel like we could likely learn a lot from them. They are always such a joy to encounter. On a recent foiling trip to Costa Rica there was one morning in particular when they seemed to be everywhere. I was literally dodging them like a slalom course in the waves. It was an awesome experience!
I also have to give a nod to the creative minds at Pixar. I really appreciate what they did with the turtles in Finding Nemo. I loved all the characters in that movie, but the surfer dude turtles were definitely my favorite 🤙
